then they were released!
As they grew, we fed and watered them and kept their habitats clean and repaired. We provided medicine when necessary, and plenty of enrichment to sharpen their skills.
Then October came, and release day arrived. The car's tank was filled with gasoline, the animals entered the kennels, and were loaded up for the trip.
When we got there, the kennels were unloaded and carried to the release site. One by one, the kennel doors were opened. What did the raccoons think? They thought this new world was wonderful. What did we think, after five months of the hard work of raising baby animals, we felt gratified that once again, we were able to provide a helping hand. I felt great pride, not pride of ego, but pride of heart- when you can actually feel your chest swell, like having a secret that you're bustin' to tell.
You know what's really cool? Even though you may never see or talk to another wildlife rehabber, anywhere on the planet, when it's release time, we all feel the same things!
Adios bambinos! Until next year.....
