As the vernal season unfolds, Purple Finches and Common Redpolls come and go, along with the irruptive visits from Evening and Pine Grosbeaks; (our Rose-breasted Grosbeaks normally stay a little while re-establishing their relationships). Goldfinches pass through and also the obligatory Blackbirds, like the metallic sounding Red-winged, the Brewer's, and of course the Cowbird. Our Barred Owl pair are seen amidst the maples, the secretive Pileateds' appear, then are gone.
After awhile, the songs of Chickadees are joined by the Ovenbird's "teacher" "teacher" "teacher" refrain and the soon to be heard high notes of lemony, Yellow Warblers interspersed with the fluid aria's of their cousins, the Chestnut-sideds. White-throated Sparrows chant forebodingly like the opening notes of a Beethoven Symphony. Cardinal red sharply yodels. Oriole orange has a lovely lilt.
Duets are popular: the quick Purple Martin songster, and the bubbly Crissal Thrasher. The almost inaudible, lofty Golden-crowned Kinglet, and the flowing medley of the Western Meadowlark. The pleading Eastern Bluebird singing opposite the chipper Wrentit.
Finally arriving from Mexico, buzzing and squeaking, come the Ruby-throated Hummingbirds, eager to perform their bold courtship displays. Albert's Towhee sounds off in staccato beside the friendly tones of the American Redstart, entwined with a Blue-headed Vireo's madrigal. American Dippers trill busy ditties, Carolina Wrens clearly carol, while Veerys' echo eloquently.
And now, without further ado, taking center stage, beginning with our beloved American Robin, and concluding with the flute-like Wood Thrush, your attention please!..........The Dawn Chorus:
"Where I go, I arrive, cheerily"
"Bees, bees, honey bees, visit flowers, carry pollen"
"Welcome the fawns, all the does' are giving birth"
"Tee hee hee hee hee hee hee perrr-fect, the warm breeze today is perfect"
"I sing high from maple trees"
"Each year we are here, we are here, singing clear"
